Biography

Born in 1971 in Brooklyn, New York, Laura James is a self-taught painter of Antiguan heritage. James paints religious subjects and visual dramatisations of Biblical stories using iconography found in Ethiopian Christian art. Laura’s work is widely collected and exhibited. In 2000, Laura James received a major commission from Liturgy Training Publications to create 35 images for a new reading of the Book of the Gospels. Her images have been published in several publications including the Oxford Illustrated History of the Bible. Her work can also be found nationally through greeting cards published by Ethno Graphics. Working and residing in Brooklyn with her husband and three children, Laura James is a member of several art organisations. She is very active in her community and has produced numerous cultural events, art exhibitions and film festivals.
