MENCARINI, MARCELLO

Biography

Marcello Mencarini is a multifaceted photographer with a career spanning various domains of visual storytelling. From 1988 to 1994, he was a pivotal member of the Radiocorriere TV's photography team, capturing cultural and entertainment events on both the national and international fronts. Mencarini's lens traversed diverse territories, ranging from photojournalism encompassing current affairs and politics to portraiture, where he specialized in capturing the essence of artists, classical musicians, and writers. His collaboration with the pioneering Italian photographic agency, Grazia Neri, commenced in 1984 and extended until the agency's closure in 2009. During this period, Mencarini embarked on a photographic journey, closely documenting contemporary composers such as Luciano Berio, Giuseppe Sinopoli, John Cage, and Karlheinz Stockhausen to illuminate their creative processes. His analog photographs remain enshrined within the archives of the MuFoCo, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Cinisello Balsamo. Transitioning into the digital age, Mencarini co-founded Rosebud in 1995, Italy's inaugural digital image distribution agency alongside Graziano Arici and Francesco Gorup de Besanez. Mencarini's visionary pursuits continued as he pioneered projects in multimedia and user-generated content at Emage, a multimedia branch of Grazia Neri. In 2005, he scripted and directed the groundbreaking documentary 'Nuovi comizi d'amore' in collaboration with Barbara Seghezzi. The film, shot on a Nokia N90 cell phone, explored evolving technologies' impact on documentary filmmaking, gaining recognition at prestigious festivals. A true innovator, Mencarini's career continues to evolve, from daring performances like 'Camera at Work' at the Venice Film Festival to his role as founder and director of the 'Rosebud2' photojournalistic agency, specializing in cultural portraits and events. Since 2019, he has further extended his influence as the artistic director of Todimmagina, a contemporary photography festival in Todi.
