Biography

Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury gave their collection of world art to the University of East Anglia in 1973. A young architect called Norman Foster was commissioned to build his first ever public building and it was within those walls that the Sainsbury Collection was installed. The collection itself includes exquisite objects from many different world cultures; Polynesian, African, Pre-Colombian and Indian amongst others, as well as fine arts from the Western canon. Contemporary fine arts are well represented too; a large number of works by the eminent potter Lucie Rie have been lent from Lady Sainsbury’s collection, but also included are sculptures by John Davies and Henry Moore, and the iconic ‘Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen’ by Degas.
