8 April 1992 - American tennis star Arthur Ashe announced that he had AIDS, acquired from a blood transfusion during heart surgery. He died 10 months later. 30 years.

9 April 1872 - Birth of Léon Blum, Prime Minister of France (1936–37, 1938, 1946–47). 150 years.

10 April 1847 - Birth of Joseph Pulitzer, Hungarian-born American newspaper publisher and philanthropist. The annual Pulitzer Prizes were established in 1917 following his $2 million endowment to Columbia University. He also pioneered ‘yellow journalism’ which favoured eye-catching head- lines over quality journalism and research in order to attract more readers. 175 years.

10 April 1932 - Paul von Hindenburg was elected President of Germany for a second term, defeating Adolf Hitler. Hindenburg had intended retiring, but was persuaded to stand for election as the only person who could defeat Hitler. 90 years.

10 April 1932 - Birth of Omar Sharif, Egyptian film and television actor (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Funny Girl, and more). He was also a leading contract bridge player. (Died 2015.) 90 years.

10 April 1962 - Death of Michael Curtiz, Hungarian-born American film director (The Adventures of Robin Hood, Angels with Dirty Faces, Casablanca, White Christmas, and many more). He is also credited with discovering film stars including Errol Flynn and Doris Day. 60 years.

14 April 1962 - Georges Pompidou became Prime Minister of France. 60 years.

15 April 1772 - Birth of Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, French naturalist. 250 years.

16 April 1972 - NASA launched Apollo 16 to the Moon. This was the fifth manned landing and the first in the lunar highlands, although it was nearly aborted after an engine crisis. 50 years.

18 April 1942 - Birth of Jochen Rindt, German-born Austrian racing driver. Formula One world champion in 1970. (Title awarded posthumously following his death in a crash while practising earlier in the season.) 80 years.

19 April 1932 - Birth of Jayne Mansfield, American stage and film actress and singer. One of Hollywood’s leading blonde bombshells of the 1950s. (Died 1967.) 90 years.

20 April 1942 - The Prime Minister of Vichy France, Pierre Laval, gave a radio address to the French people, saying that ‘a policy of understanding and true reconciliation with Germany must be loyally carried out’. He was executed in 1945 for collaborating with the enemy and plotting against the security of the state. 80 years.

23 April 1932 - The Royal Shakespeare Theatre opened in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, replacing the one that burnt down in 1926. 90 years.

23 April 1942 - Birth of Sandra Dee, American film and TV actress and model. (Died 2005.) 80 years.

17 June 1982 - Death of Roberto Calvi, Italian banker. Known as ‘God’s Banker’ because of his close association with the Vatican. Found dead in London. His death was initially ruled to be suicide, but a second inquest ruled that he had been murdered. 40 years.
