Tullio Farabola was one of the most preeminent Italian photojournalists of the twentieth century. Born in Milan in 1920, he eventually followed in his father’s footsteps and took up photography. During World War Two, he documented important historical events including the German occupation and Mussolini’s last speech.
Farabola survived the war and continued his career as a photojournalist, opening a photo agency in Milan and documenting the harsh living conditions of post-war Italy.
In the 1960’s, Farabola began organising a historical photographic archive. As acquisitions of materials from other archives began to increase, the rapid expansion of Farabola’s collection ensued. The first major acquisition was the archive of Adolfo Porry Pastorel’s VEDO Agency in the mid 1950s. The archives of numerous reputable Italian photographers were subsequently acquired, as well as. significant collections of photographs documenting fascism in Nazi Germany.
The collection continued to grow exponentially, spanning a diverse range of subjects, the vast
majority of which have been digitised today.
From the Pope to Elvis Presley, and from Andy Warhol to the Pharaohs, the Farabola Archive has it all.
Over 9,000 historical images from the fantastic Farabola Archive have been digitised and uploaded to the Bridgeman website, with even more archival gems being catalogued right now.
