Biography

Louis Monier, born on October 6, 1943, in Montélimar, France, is a distinguished French portrait photographer renowned for his specialization in capturing writers. He pursued his education at Émile-Loubet High School in Valence and the Florimont Institute in Geneva before enrolling at the École supérieure de journalisme in Paris. An independent photographer since 1968, Monier collaborated with prominent entities like Gamma agency, Nouvelles littéraires, Magazine littéraire, Figaro littéraire, Stratégie, Journal de la Presse, and Sud Ouest. In 1981, he founded the Monier A.P.P.M. press photo agency. Louis Monier, the photographer of the House of Marguerite Yourcenar in Saint-Jans-Cappel, a European writers' residency, has amassed around a million negatives encompassing fifteen thousand writers. He was honoured with the Excellence in Arts and Culture Award by the Romanian Cultural Institute for promoting Romanian cultural values and the Francophonie on March 19, 2018. His works have graced exhibitions at prestigious institutions like the French Institute in Tokyo, the French House at New York University, and galleries across Europe. Monier's photographic legacy extends through several influential books capturing the essence of literary giants, and his iconic portrait of Florence Aubenas remains etched in media history. Through his lens, he has illuminated the faces of literary luminaries such as Samuel Beckett, Marguerite Yourcenar, Romain Gary, and many others, solidifying his place as a masterful chronicler of authors' visages.
