Biography
A graduate of the Ecole Centrale de Paris, Georges Pierre worked for 2 years as an engineer in the private sector. He then spent 3 years at the Higher Technical Commission for Cinema then 3 years at the Image Research Department, in the ORTF Research Department. Tempted by the theater, he took several drama classes and became an actor. It was during a tour in Africa that he took his first photos. He then worked as a freelancer for 3 years for Elle magazine then as editor for Photo newspaper , before opting for the status of independent photographer, represented by Gamma then by Sygma from its creation. For Georges Pierre, still photography does not aim to transform the moving image into a still image but to restore the spirit of the film, which involves personal work of interpretation and involvement on the part of the photographer. . In 31 years, he photographed more than 100 films, beginning in 1960 with Last Year at Marienbad by Alain Resnais and ending with La Note Bleue by Andrzej Zulawski. Georges Pierre is also the founder of the Association of Film Photographers, responsible for defending the material and moral interests of film photographers. It was in this context that he began the fight for recognition of the status of author of still photographers. He is the inventor of a “blimp” (soundproofing device for a camera), which allows the photographer to work on the film set during shots. He is one of the editors of the Prisma Encyclopedia of Photography (article on fashion photography) and of television programs on the same subject.
