Biography
Founded by King Charles II for the “succour and relief of veterans broken by age and war”, the Royal Hospital Chelsea continues to this end today and the sight of the Chelsea Pensioners in their scarlet coats has become an icon of the borough. Their picture collection includes depictions of the ‘Men in Scarlet’, great military events and two portraits of mistresses of the royal founder; Nell Gwynn and Louise de Kerouaille.
