Biography
Sarah Battle studied Printed Textiles at Camberwell/Central School of Art followed by an MA in Printmaking at The Royal College of Art. She graduated with distinction in 1991. From 1987 to 2018 Sarah was a member of the internationally renowned textile design group, First Eleven Studio. The interaction of printmaking techniques with the motifs and conventions of surface pattern design continue to characterise Sarah's visual practise, be it for textile design, greeting card and stationary outcomes, book illustrations or images for exhibition. Sarah's design work has featured in collections and publications across Europe, America and Asia, while her prints and paintings have been exhibited in several London galleries including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Sarah lives in an 18th century weaver's cottage in Saddleworth. Her workspace is the former loom room, which now houses Sarah's printing press. Her imagery plays other enduring interests in birds, animals and plant forms, vintage printed ephemera and tin toys. These subjects are turned into multi- media motifs through, innovative daily use of printmaking techniques, with lino- cut, dry- point, collagraph, stencilling, embossing and collage, all synthesised into the fabrication of individual images.
