FEINSTEIN, HAROLD

Biography

Harold Feinstein, 1931-2015, borrowed a Rolleiflex camera from a neighbor when he was 15 and set forth to record the American experience. Born on Coney Island to Jewish immigrant parents, young Feinstein was the youngest member of New York’s progressive Photo League cooperative. Drafted to fight in the Korean War, he documented the daily life of young GIs far away from home and family. An influential street photographer and teacher, Feinstein’s early documentary work was encouraged by Edward Steichen at MOMA and his later work included experimental scan imaging of delicate natural history subjects.
