SCIENCE AND SOCIETY PICTURE LIBRARY

Biography

The Science and Society Picture Library, represents the vast archive of the NMSI and in particular the Science Museum, the National Railway Museum and the National Media Museum (NMPFT). The Science Museum’s many weird and wonderful scientific instruments are the results of scientists’ investigations throughout the ages. Similarly the Media Museum’s early cameras chart the development of photography; there is even a camera amongst their collection that was designed by Eadweard Muybridge specially to capture fast motion. The National Railway Museum, as well as having many paintings and prints that chart the history and development of rail travel, is also home to the legendary ‘Stephenson’s Rocket’, the early steam locomotive built by Robert Stephenson’s Newcastle based engineering company in 1829.
