SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERY

Biography

The Southampton City Art Gallery’s greatest strength is 20th century British Art and its impressive collection of contemporary works by British artists. A fine selection of works by the Camden Town Group, and paintings by such highly reputed artists as Sir Stanley Spencer, Matthew Smith and Philip Wilson Steer are represented. Numbering 2,600 works and spanning six centuries, the collections earliest work is an Italian Renaissance altarpiece by Allegretto Nuzi, the most contemporary is a video installation by 1996 Turner Prize winner, Douglas Gordon. From Burne-Jones’s ‘Perseus Series’ to seventeenth century Dutch landscapes or French Impressionist paintings, the quality and variety of works is remarkably high. The Art Gallery also has an outstanding collection of the work of studio potters from between the wars, the result of a generous bequest by the Very Reverend Milner-White, a former Dean of York Minster and Southampton local.
