THE ATKINSON
Biography
This gallery houses British art of the 17th and 20th centuries, including works by Lely, Cotman, Ford Madox Brown, Sickert and Ginner, as well as The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West. It contains a large collection of British watercolours, etchings and engravings, plus an interesting collection of ceramics, oriental arts and crafts and sculpture. The gallery holds themed exhibitions from the permanent collection and every month spotlights a painting or sculpture of the month, with a talk being given about the artist and subject. There is also a temporary exhibition programme, providing an opportunity for visitors to see touring exhibitions and work by practising contemporary artists.
