WELSH, KEN
Biography
In Ken's own words: 'I’ve been around quite a bit but I find there’s quite a bit still to get around to. 'I found myself seriously pursuing photography longer ago than I care to remember after deciding it would allow me a better lifestyle than the one I had. I had worked in TV in Australia, as a travel book writer (for Berlitz), as a pulp novel writer and as a magazine editor. But the work I enjoyed most was as a freelance travel writer taking photographs to illustrate my own articles, some of which were published by The New York Times, The Boston Globe,The Washington Post amongst others. I particularly enjoyed taking the pictures. 'So, photography. Forget the typewriter and give me the camera. What a job! It has taken me to over 50 countries in Central and South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. And it was those travels - which continue several times a year - which introduced me to history, the subject in which I am strongly represented on Bridgeman Images. 'I’ve always been a sucker for illustrated books from the 19th century and earlier and, unable to resist temptation in some hidden secondhand bookshop, have often paid serious excess baggage charges to get them home. It is the material from these very old books which you see here on Bridgeman Images. They are digitally captured by camera or scanner, cleaned, researched and captioned then released back into the world with a new lease of life. 'I live in Spain which has been my home for decades. Close enough to an airport for when the need arises. Brimming with ancient cities and their associated history. Alive with beauty. As I said: I’ve been around a bit but I find there’s quite a bit still to get around to. So my cameras are well exercised. And I am well content.'
