The City Museum Art Gallery is home to some outstanding collections of local and national interest. The collections fall into six main categories: decorative art, fine art; eastern art and culture; archaeology and history; geology and natural history. Bristol, an important port since the Middle Ages, had been trading directly with the Americas for sugar and tobacco since at least the 16th century.
