GUILDHALL ART GALLERY
Biography
Many famous and well loved pictures are on public view at the Guildhall Art Gallery. The Corporation of London began collecting works of art in the 17th century and now comprises 4,000 works ranging from portraits of kings and queens to important battles, period views of London and the works of Second World War artists. The collection concentrates on London subjects. Victorian pictures are arguably the most popular, including work by Millais, Landseer, John Constable and John Singleton. The Corporation’s first commissions were portraits of the judges appointed to assess the damage caused by the Great Fire of London and a wonderful selection still remain on display.
