Bridgeman Artist

HAYLLAR, EDITH

Biography

Edith Hayllar (1829-1920) was the second eldest of the artist James Hayllar’s four daughters, all of whom were successful in their own right and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Edith specialised in sporting subjects such as tennis, boating and fishing and generic incidents which evoke familiar narratives to the audience. Hayllar’s style which is detailed and meticulous, has been referred to as photo-realistic. The ability to convey atmosphere, even without a human subject in the composition, is Hayllar’s most consistent skill.
