ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM

Biography

Evoking the style of a 15th century Venetian palace, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum invites visitors to experience art in a unique, intimate environment. Founder Isabella Stewart Gardner, formed and arranged the museum’s pre-eminent collection, designed the building and opened her personal creation to the public in 1903. The Museum’s three floors of galleries, which open onto an interior courtyard with seasonal horticulture displays, feature more than 2,500 paintings, sculptures, tapestries and other objects spanning centuries and many cultures. Particularly rich in Italian Renaissance art, the collection includes works by Titian, Botticelli and Raphael, as well as by later French, German and Dutch masters, such as Rembrandt, and more modern works by Degas, Matisse, Sargent and Whistler.
