SANTORINIOS, ANTONIOS
Biography
Antonios Santorinios was born in Regensburg, Germany, in 1941. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Art and the Academy of Graphic Art in Munich, he received a scholarship to continue his studies in Greece. He arrived on Santorini in 1966, fell in love with the island, and made it his home. There, he rediscovered and adopted the old local technique of painting on glass, using scenes from everyday life on Santorini and the nearby island of Crete as his subject matter. For much of his life, he continued to paint on glass in his own inimitable style, depicting the wild beauty of the island scenery while adding a local human touch. His characters reflected the warmth and hospitality of the people of his chosen homeland, captured amidst scenes of harvesting, feasting, and tranquil seascapes. Later in life, he lived and worked near Chania, Crete. Throughout his career, he held more than eighty solo and group exhibitions of paintings and etchings, with some showcased at The Barbican Art Centre in London, as well as in Munich, Athens, and the USA. Antonios Santorinios passed away in August 2022.
