Biography

The Towner Art Gallery holds an interesting collection of Victorian art. John Chisholm Towner was a local benefactor who, on his death in 1920, left scores of paintings from his private collection and £5000 to build an art gallery. In the event of his death the local council bought an 18th century manor house and converted it. All Towner’s original bequests are on display including work by Frederick Goodall, William James Mueller, Thomas Sidney, George Smith. John Frederick Herring is represented and there are two works by James Orrock. There is one single foreign picture by the Italian artist Lorenzo Cecconi. There are portraits of the first residents of the manor house by John Hamilton Mortimer. Later work includes David Murray, William Nicholson and a room devoted to Eric Ravilious.
