Biography

George Frederic Watts OM, RA (1817 – 1904) was widely considered to be the greatest painter of the Victorian era. A portraitist, sculptor, landscape painter and symbolist, Watts's work embodied the most pressing themes and ideas of the time, earning him the title 'England's Michelangelo'. Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village is home to Watts’s studio collection, including early pieces such as The Wounded Heron (1837) and a self-portrait painted in the year he died. The collection also consists of an extensive collection of Victorian photography, sculpture and works on paper and boasts works by Watts’s contemporaries including Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris and Frederic Leighton. http://www.wattsgallery.org.uk/en-gb/collections/highlights-permanent-collection/
